                WEDNESDAY.MAY 17th 2017 at Fiveacres,Allet at 7pm.

                                 LESLEY ALLEN.Lecturer at Truro College.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT  - JOIDES RESOLUTION DRILLING SHIP.

Updated research findings of deep sea drilling of Oceanic Crust and sediments /

to Andesite /and volcanic activity to /Continental Crust within the Izu Bonin Arc,in the

Phillipines and elsewere by IODP JOIDES  ship Resolution.Lesley will start the talk with a brief introduction and has arranged for a SHIP TO SHORE connection from Fiveacres to the JOIDES RESOLUTION DRILLING SHIP AND CREW DURING THE EVENING.

The sedimentary oozes recovered show dateable layers of volcanic ash which indicate how frequent volcanic eruptions have occurred, from identifiable volcanoes over many 000's of years. It is hoped that members can be ready with questions which they can ask directly to crew and scientists onboard the ship. The sedimentary oozes contain many microscopic fossil foraminifera and  similar varieties and Tropical species to those that occurred in the Upper Cretaceous Chalk, and Tertiary to the present day oceanic sediments.

This World research project shows how important it is to scientific research and the development of skills knowledge and new technology for International collaboration to occur.           OUR REGULAR ATTENDING MEMBERS ARE ALREADY AWARE THAT DUE TO MATTERS OUT OF OUR CONTROL THIS EVENT HAD TO BE CANCELLED.The first was arriving at Fiveacres at the scene of a multi car accident at the junction just outside. The highway was shut down obviously but those members who found their way to the venue were then further disappointed by Fiveacres being cut off from the Internet-thought to be due to the accident.I made a decision to send Lesley back home to contact the ship to explain matters and those Members who had not returned home stayed for an informal discussion and coffee/tea and biscuits.

PLEASE SEE ARRANGEMENTS FOR AUGUST 16TH. 2017.

SAIJO HIGH SCHOOL VISIT CORNWALL AND UK

Saijo Senior High School was established in the 1940's and has in  its current education policy; We educate our students to strike a good  academic and athletic balance which recognises that a broad international vision and high-level communication skills are essential in developing young people who are scientifically intelligent,so that they can be internationally successful in various fields in the future.

VISITS TO UNITED KINGDOM AND ENGLAND.Previous visits in 2013 included the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy,University of Cambridge where short presentations were given concerning their group research projects with researchers and Phd students.                                    Also a visit to view the National Railway Museum in York. The Railway History Park in Saijo City has the control car of the first generation Type Zero Shinkansen "bullet train" which debuted in 1964.The corresponding twin control car is displayed in York and sustains a strong bond between the two facilities.

VISIT TO CORNWALL 27TH AND 28TH MARCH 2015.

The school intends exploring links between Cornwall and Japan.

  • The connections with Richard Trevithick and his invention of the World's first full size Steam Locomotive and later the first Steam Rail Way Locomotive will be studied. Also the close links between Richard Trevithick's descendants who actively helped the  development of Japanese Railways.      Trevithick's descendants still live in Japan and have visited Camborne's Trevithick Celebrations. The ambition should be to encourage future links along these lines.

  • The links between the development of  the Japanese Mining Industry and Cornwall and the Royal Geological Society is providing a worthwhile and ongoing study as a former Curator of the RGSC and Author of articles in RGSC Transactions 1875 onwards, and Inspector of Mines Robert James Frecheville reported on Gold and Copper Mining and was one of the first Europeans to do so in Japan.

The students are being encouraged into an ongoing study of the Ichinkawa Antimony and Stibnite Mine and this will feature in a short presentation at Geevor Mine and the visit to the Museum in Truro to view Cornish Stibnites as well as ones from Ichinkawa will provide a great interest..

Future links will be encouraged with Cornish and Truro College Students and  the Members of the  Royal Geological Society have been  invited to vist the School's presentations at Geevor.

It is hoped that the use of IT and the World web will be used to aid the links established so far and help in future historic, cultural and scientific studies between the two Countries.

Saijo School are looking forward to their visit to the Cornish Mines in the West Country- Botallack Mine,Levant Mine and Geevor Mine and the Cornish Mineral Collections of the Cornwall Museum and the meeting  arranged there with Kingsley Rickard of the Trevithick Society.
